College-Level Teaching Experience
  • 1984 -1993: College of Eastern Utah - San Juan Campus.
    Taught full time teaching load in excess of 48 credits/ academic year.
    Courses taught include: Navajo language for Native and Non-Native Speakers, Basic College Mathematics, Nursing Pharmacology Math, Introduction to Algebra, Freshman Seminar, Field Biology and Ecology, Human Anatomy, and River Run and Backpacking as part of Summer
    Experience. Courses were taught in Blanding, Monument Valley, Navajo Mountain, Mexican Hat, Bluff, Montezuma Creek, and Monticello. Selected by peers for Excellence in Teaching Award 1990.
  • Currently Ednet Certified to teach Navajo language courses developed under Star Schools curriculum development project.
  • 1980-1983 and 1994 to Present: Teach many of the courses listed above carrying a teaching load ranging from one-third to one-half full time status.
  • 1990 to Present: Teach Navajo language courses on an as per request adjunct basis for Fort Lewis State College, Adams State College, and Weber State University. Courses are designed to meet the bilingual educational needs of public school personnel in San Juan County and in the Cortez CO. and Shiprock N.M. areas.

College-Level Administrative Experience
  • 1981 to Present: Director, Student Support Services TRIO Project.
    The primary objectives of the project are to 1) Increase the College Retention and Graduation Rates, 2) Increase the Transfer Rates to Four-Year Institutions, and 3) Foster an Institutional Climate Supportive of Student Success. Duties included: Recruit and hire faculty and staff personnel, supervise the project in providing services and accomplishing objectives, prepare, monitor, and expend budget of over $200,000 annually in accordance with federal regulations,
    evaluate educational programs and services, coordinate with Dean of Instruction in the scheduling of developmental courses, facilitate staff and faculty professional development, prepare and submit grant applications and annual reports, and coordinate with other offices on
    campus in the provision of services. During the past seventeen years, the project has met or exceeded its objectives and has successfully been reviewed by Dept. of Education site visitors. Grant applications have consistently ranked in the upper 5% (once ranked top proposal) of over 1,200 application submitted nationally.
  • 1993 to 1996: Coordinated the development, approval, and offering of the Bilingual Endorsement program at the College of Eastern Utah - San Juan Campus.
    Responsibilites included organizing faculty in the development of a 30 credit hour program consistent with State Office of Education rubric. Presented program to Curriculum and Instruction Commitee for approval. Presented new degree program to Board of Regents for approval. Coordinated with the Deans from Colleges of Education at U.S.U., U.of U., Weber State, and S.U.U., and BOR staff in the provision of upper division credit. Worked closely with school principals and district administration in scheduling courses. This exemplary educational program was the first Bilingual Endorsement program in the State of Utah and was subsequently modified and adopted by other institutions. Served on State of Utah
    Bilingual Curriculum Task Force to approve and align Bilingual Endorsement programs across the state. The CEU - San Juan Campus Bilingual Endorsement program offered courses to over 200 public school teachers via Ednet and remote site courses.

Invited to Southwest Authors Symposium and Signing Reception, May 1996 Mesa Verde National Park Museum Association

"Training Programs for Bilingual Educators of Native Children" January 1996 University of Moscow, Russia, Beloyarski, and Kazym, Siberia. Selected by Education Dept. of Moscow and Academy of Educational Development of Moscow to present CEU's Bilingual Endorsement curriculum to educators of native Khanty and Mansy children in the Tyumen Province of Siberia. These native people are related to the Athapaskan peoples of Alaska, Canada, and the U.S.
Southwest.

Navajo Fontware, computer software enabling desktop publishing in Navajo. Utilized at colleges, universities, and public schools throughout the Southwest.

Conversational Navajo Dictionary 1989 (over 60,000 in circulation)

Conversational Navajo Workbook, 1995 (over 15,000 in circulation)
These two texts have or are being utilized at the following institutions teaching Navajo language courses: University of New Mexico, Arizona State University, University of Arizona, Northern Arizona University, Fort Lewis College, Adams State College, San Juan College NM, Northland Pioneer Community College, Dine College, Brigham Young University, Salt Lake Community College, University of Indiana, and universities in Canada, France, and Italy.

Conversational Navajo Interactive CD-ROM, 1996 Developed as part of Star Schools curriculum project. Utilizes state-of-the-art technology and learning techniques that can be used as a class presentation graphics for distance education courses or as a stand-alone for individualized instruction.
